Year 6 Open Evening
Our new school building
Welcome: We would like to invite all interested families and pupils to join us for our Open Evening based on the ‘Our Lady of Help’ site. The evening begins at 5:30pm on Thursday 3rd October 2024 with a talk from the Headteacher, followed by an opportunity to tour our current site as well as share the exciting plans for our new school building coming next year.
New Building: The great news is that those pupils applying to join St Leonard’s in September 2025 will be in the new St Leonard’s, state of the art, building by the time they complete Year 7!
For Everyone: Catholic schools are here to serve the whole community. We are open to all pupils, regardless of faith. Across the country, about 40% of pupils in Catholic schools come from a variety of faith backgrounds and none.
Academic excellence: We are amongst the top 3 performing schools in the North East for
both GCSE results and university entrance.
Any questions on admissions, contact Nicola Callender on: ncallender@st-leonards.durham.sch.uk
£45million: St Leonard’s is the first RAAC school in the country to be rebuilt, due for completion in Easter 2026. With over £45 million invested in both our new build and temporary site, we wish to take this as an opportunity to further serve our community.
We look forward to seeing you on Open Evening – all are welcome!

These design images give an impression of how the new building will look. In particular the combination of the historic Victorian house with modern state of the art buildings is more than impressive. Equally, the connection between inside spaces and outside spaces really draws out the historic nature of the site and the beauty of the views to the south of the school site.
Top Left: The view of the entrance to the new building from just outside Springwell Hall.
Top Right: The view looking back into the school with the dining room directly ahead and the two wings of the school on either side.
Middle Left: The generously sized dining room, with views opening to the south and the outside area where pupils can gather.
Middle Right: The view of the school from the current road entrance of Fieldhouse Lane.
Bottom Left: The view from North Road.
Bottom Right: The entrance to the new building as seen from outside Springwell Hall.
Bottom Right: The view of the entrance to the new building from just outside Springwell Hall.
The view from North Road will show the historic Springwell Hall as it was originally designed to be seen.
View from North Road: The images above start to visualise the look of the new site. The first image is looking into the site by the gatehouse on North Road. The design opens up a clear view of Springwell Hall from North Road, with no buildings in front of the historic house. You can also see the current Martyrs’ Building that Sixth Formers currently use. The gap between the two buildings would then become the walkway to the new school building and as you walk down this path a view of new building opens ahead of you. You can see from the first image how the historic nature of the site is restored from the gatehouse entrance, which is in keeping with the other heritage aspects of North Road.
View from the south end of the school site: The second image is looking back into the school from the edge of the yard just where the grass starts to rise. You can see the current Sixth Form Block on the right and the new three-storied building on the left. As you can see the school yard remains in the same space, and this will become dedicated sports areas for PE lessons as well as lunchtime and after school sport. Again, you can see that this design leaves the beautiful tress that edge our site in position, and the view looking out of the school to the south, with the obelisk framed by the trees remains.
