Choosing your Options
Advice for choosing your options.
St Leonard’s offer a choice of courses tailor-made for the individual, and we are always looking to expand our provision. We will always consider other subjects we may be able to offer in addition. Unlike in colleges with fixed option blocks, we shape our provision around individual needs of students and encourage applications to be submitted as soon as possible, and certainly before the deadline of Monday 3rd November to enable as many students as possible to study their chosen combination of subjects.
There are some students who find it difficult to decide on 3 A Level subjects and so initially start with 4 for a trial period before deciding which 3 subjects they will continue with into Year 13, this provides additional flexibility. The majority of students who take A Levels study three subjects, with Further Mathematics in addition if required.
Students can also pursue a vocational pathway which allows the selection of an extended diploma BTEC with an additional A Level if they wish. The BTEC is different from the traditional terminal examination, allowing students to be examined in one module at a time, in a more practical way, and to re-sit modules where necessary. We also offer students the chance to change subjects, up until the end of September, if they need to re-think.
In Year 12, students are invited to sign up to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which is worth half an A-Level and is an excellent way for students to develop their independent study skills, gain a qualification in any area which interests them and potentially get a lower offer from a university.

It is a pleasure to share with you the outcome of our recent Catholic School Inspection. It is a credit to the entire community – families, pupils, staff and our parishes – to be graded ‘Outstanding across all areas’. You can read the report here and an accompanying letter from Mr Simmons here.
