Our Art & Design curriculum
Intent: The Schemes of Work are designed to enable our students to sequentially build their technical skills through becoming proficient in a range of materials across a range of subject matter, throughout a particular year and following into the subsequent year. KS3 consists of developing technical and designing skills in the contexts of Fine Art, Architecture, Graphic Design, Photography and Fashion.
To develop student’s creative design skills through enabling them to become independent thinkers and visually literate. Year 7 is a foundation year designed to establish student’s individual starting points, develop missing technical skills quickly based upon students varied experience and skills in Primary Schools. Hence the year focuses on two of the fundamental basics in Art and Design of Drawing and Painting. Year 8 builds upon the drawing and colour skills taught in year 7 through: Technical drawing, designing and three-dimensional realisation in Unit1. Refinements in drawing, colour, mixed media and creative designing in the context of Graphic Design and Animation in Unit 2. In year 9, all three units build upon and emphasise the vocational aspects of the subject with a view towards GCSE retention and the Creative industries. Unit 1 develops independent creative thinking and designing in a range of two-dimensional media including digital. Unit 2 develops two dimensional skills and designing in the context of Fashion design. Unit 3 develops drawing and painting to a higher level and the ability to work as part of a team collaboratively in Fine Art.
To nurture a passion and enthusiasm for Art and Design that enables students to not only succeed at KS3 and examination success at GCSE and A level, but to become the next generation of artists and designers in the Creative Industries.
